>That may be so, but 1 - I want to be in control of what the PC is doing. 2 - I believe they may waste time attempting things unless you tell them. It must take time for each PC to attempt and fail to establish SMB3, then 2, then 1 with the server. Would be interesting to know if it helps.

At this point, we moved the live data to a Win7 share, and have them work that way, temporarily. The performance was good at first, but after about an hour, it degraded to be almost as slow as before. This is a setup with about 10 users connected at one time. The obvious culprit would be the number of users, and that's what the network techs may suggest, however, we have clients with a lot more concurrent users and they don't have this problem. I am inclined to think it may have to do with one or two PCs inducing traffic/or lock latency. They have a 1Gb network; what people may not realize is that the Gbit networks must have all devices (cables, network cards, drivers) work perfectly in order to achieve that kind of a bandwidth. If there's one or two older XP machines with faulty NICs/drivers, they m,ight cause a lot of problems. So, as you suggest, it may be time to look at each connected PC and its settings. Thanks again.
