I think that is kind of what I do now. When most of my dev work was on my "grandpa box" at home and I'd go on the road I would just use Logmein from the laptop to work. Last year I was using VirtualBox from that box to work at DJ in New Jersey, so when I was visiting relatives in VA I just used logmein to get to that box to run the VM for the box in NJ. Strange world we've created. I get a kick out of sometimes working on three or four different remote environments at the same time from my office here in different windows. Recently Jos turned me on to RAdmin and administering a server in SA is like working on my own network.
But I take your point about having that be the marketing model - an OS for a home server that all your devices would use as their "cloud".
