>>>Good question, Charles, and what local peripherals can you plug into the Android Desktop and what control will you have over them?

>What peripherals did you have in mind? If there's no value in portability then I agree it reduces the advantage over a static grandpa box with stuff plugged into it- although these new devices do have docking stations and keyboards etc, so who knows.

>During a recent hotel stay I noticed a printer in the foyer to which you can print by uploading your document to a url. Now there are Android apps that can be configured to do this automatically, even picking up the details via bluetooth. It's no longer true that you need special drivers on every device that needs to access a peripheral. Another reduction in complexity. It does mean that cheap printers using the Wintel box rather than their own processor are going out of fashion, but that's not a huge loss IMHO.

Since a lot of peripherals now are wireless it really doesn't require anything being physically hooked to them as long as you address them and send something. Lots of printers working that way now printing pictures from phones etc. Bluetooth or Wifi kind of makes physical connection moot so now you are just down to handshake protocols.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
