I do 80% of my development in VC++ solely to the power of
Visual Studio's debugger with edit-and-continue abilities. If
Linux supported an edit-and-continue ABI, I would've abandoned
VS and VC++ long ago. I even tried to get the GCC and GDB authors
to write one. No one was interested. They saw no need. I could not
believe it. I view edit-and-continue as the single greatest asset
a developer possesses in terms of an assistance tool for debugging
(standard fare excepted of course). Saves hours per week.
