I think the secret (or should I say my secret) to enjoy reading is to read everything as fiction, including (specially!) the Bible. Anyways, the author did not claim that Jesus was the son of Herod the Great but the son of Antipater ben Herod, Herod the Great's son. I know, everything is clear now :)
