Joke was referring to church effectively 'spicing it up' for people by preaching that sex is a 'sin' and thus giving it appeal of forbidden fruit.
(Something like what prohibition did to alcohol consumption back in 30ies)
I am sure everybody around here is thrilled that sexual revolution took place back in late 60ies, but imagine if 1968 happened few centuries back;
Nowadays, You would be having it once a month even with a mistress! :))
