Another thought (long shot) is to make some sort of artificial grouping of data (which starts or not on new column). Again data munging inside report cursor.
Strategy would be to cheat report engine somehow into executing one level of grouping or another (one that starts on new column/page) depend on data.
Never did this kind of cheating but you never know :)
