Well ... it was presumed to be the answer. They never got a proper answer from the computer the built to explain the meaning of the original given answer "42" because of an intergalactic highway construction project which destroyed the computer shortly before the explanation would've been computed.
My favorite quote from that book:
"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't."
