Brenda, sorry to have bothered you but all I needed to do was SetFocus on the column rather than the control. FYI it didn't matter what column the button was in as it was always the first column that received the focus. The click code just called the other form (which just had a button on to exit) and then did This.Parent.Parent.ColumnN.textfield.SetFocus().
