I spent a few hours this weekend with a pretty savvy infrastructure tech servicing medium to large sized companies in the Boston area.
He and his firm think that in the commercial world MS Windows Server, MS SQL Server and Oracle are headed for the dust heap to be replaced by Linux and open source DBMS. They say they have begun replacing revenue previously generated by selling license for those products with consulting revenue generated from installing open source products and while the top line is lower, their bottom line looks better and the client is happier.

They think that MS' Office 365 offering is a great substitute for in-house Exchange and SharePoint, which they are no longer offering.

In the commercial desktop world they think that Windows will be around for a long time.
