Hi guys, I did find the KB article shortly after I posted, and have perused it. It may be related to my problem, but is not quite the same. I have no error, and changing the Wheretype to '1' didn't help...

There seems to be some kind of limit here...the view gets all the changes from the insert fields fine, but a tableupdate to base table won't fill in the last 7 fields...the insert field order doesn't matter, it's always the last 7 fields in the view ffield order.

The 7 fields are marked updateable in both view designer and gendbc-produced code (from where current view was created). Color me mystified...
