Actually, Walter, the US is just that.. a group of United States.
One of its hallmarks is the huge diversity of climate, culture, language, and opinions that you find as you travel from state to state.
Several years ago, I moved from metropolitan New York to central New Jersey ... fewer than 90 miles and the culture change has been huge. I have several neighbors here who are avid hunters, while I had none in New York.
The fact that I can't understand why anyone in his right mind would want to carry a gun in a classroom means that I probably won't be spending much time in Arkansas and I'm sure that the people there will be OK with that too.
Our form of government doesn't allow people in New York or New Jersey to tell people in Arkansas what to do in their classrooms, and vice versa, and that's a good thing, I think.

We have school districts in the US that teach kids that the history of the earth began in the Garden of Eden.

On the other hand, I live 20 minutes from the Institute For Advanced Studies at Princeton where some of the greatest minds in modern history, including Albert Einstein, Kurt Gödel, Hetty Goldman, George Kennan, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Erwin Panofsky, Homer A. Thompson, John von Neumann, et al conducted research.

So.. wide diversity of ideas.. a few that might seem whacky to some... for sure. Third world country.. I don't think so.
