I've seen it done both ways. I typically will update _SCREEN with persistent splash information if my application even leaves the VFP window open at all. Usually I have my own top level forms which navigate the system.

If it's not broken, don't fix it.
Then again, if it's not too hard to migrate, migrate. I think the better solution is to use top level forms, though I don't know of any particular negative issue about using the _SCREEN.
