That is a good point, nobody in their right mind would kill innocent people. So what most likely happens is that the society or specific group they are living in creates an image of hate against another group of people, who are then viewed as the enemy. The effect of this kind of brainwashing is that in the mind of those young people, they have not killed someone innocent, but they have killed the enemy, or someone who is not worth living.
That explains why in certain situations (WWII, Serbia/Bosnia etc.) very normal healthy and right minded people can become psychopathic and savage almost over night, and after the situation has normalized, those same persons become normal healthy and right minded people again.
