Really? Windows phone has been rejected by the market? Me thinks you're too "USA-thinking". Have you seen the design awards? Have you seen what it's doing in Latin America (#2) and it's #1 in some countries? It's now #3 in USA (albeit some of that is attributed to Blackberry's demise). IMO, the new Nokia 1020 might be the killer device that really sells Windows Phone. Delta flight attendants will be using Windows Phone exclusively for onboard purchases.

As for the design, have you seen the new iOS? Looks a lot like Windows Phone. Have you seen all the designers talking about "flat design"? That was ushered in by Windows Phone. Twitter Bootstrap 3.0 has gone to a flat design and guess what... it also resulted in it being faster.

As for "why", Microsoft has said several times you'll be able to write one application that runs on all platforms. Also, touch is really hard to do properly on a Windows desktop. A finger is bigger than a mouse pointer. I'm not saying that's a right or wrong decision, only what MS stated.

Have you seen the data on Windows 8 sales? I don't think Microsoft is displeased.
