By default, SQL Server gets the name of the server it's running on. Run SSMS on the machine were SQL Server is installed and try to connect to (local) instance.

>I installed an instance of SQL Server 2008; no errors during the install. The computer has SQL Server 2005 Express installed.
>When I run SSMS I can see the SQLEXPRESS (2005) which I can connect to it, no problem.
>
>But when I change the name of the server from SQLEXPRESS to MSSQLSERVER (name of the new SQL Server 2008 instance) connection failed. In the SQL Server Configuration I see that MSSQLSERVER and the agent are running. The only thing not running is the SQL Server Browser. And I can't Start this since the Start is disabled.
>Must I find the way to start SQL Server Browser in order to connect from SSMS to new instance of SQL Server 2008? Or what else could be missing in my SSMS or MSSQLSERVER?
>TIA
