Good news- you can convert into a Jellybean 4.2 tablet using N2Aos. You lose the Prime streaming video but you can restore all your content and you get Google Play. To my knowledge you can't convert to iOS. Sorry. ;-)

Well, the question is this - how good are the parental controls on it?

We initially bought our daughter a kid's Android tablet (yes, to my surprise, they make Android tables for kids as young as 3). But the parental controls worked so badly that my wife found it unusable. Then we talked to two different parents who ran into similar situations, and told us that if were going to get anything, get a Kindle Fire. So we returned the kid's Android tablet and got the Kindle Fire. We use it to help her with some reading and drawing (it has some good games on it) - and yes, she watches cartoons on it. And that leads to the one bad point - my daughter is able to use her Kindle Fire to watch Caillou - I hate that show with a passion.
