Maybe I have a character
Since Elmore Leonard died last month I have been rereading a lot of his books and thinking about what he had to say. What I have mainly been appreciating is his attention to character. He said I don't pay attention to plot, I pay attention to character. He said he never knows where the plot will take him. He doesn't know what the outcome will be. He said he never knew what the last page would be. He said he imagines a character and follows that character as honestly as he can.
I think I have a character halfway in mind. She is pretty well there. Now all I need is the strength of imagination to complete her.
One thing I am sure about is that she will be small breasted. It is an article of faith in fiction that the female lead has heroic breasts. This woman doesn't need them.
She has worked her way into my imagination even though she doesn't exist.
