Acutally there is a way to avoid this.

I've got a header class in a visual classlib though you can't actually visually change it, you can hack the VCX and change it that way.
Of every predefined grid in our project, we hack the VCX or SCX and replace the header class (class and classloc fields) with the custom header.

I've found that to be working best rather than to try to replace the header at runtime.
