Mike, such an event and the "causal nebulous enemy" is a created tool, a mechanism used by the "powerful elite" to foster a believable outward appearance of an environment or worldly state which exists, but one designed to serve agendas. It is a mechanism that's hostile to people, harming to them, and one wielded by those whose ultimate goal is the literal enslavement of people (to the system, all their labor goes into supporting it), as was foretold in Revelation about the end-times and all those whose name is not written down in the Lamb's Book of Life being deceived into following the beast, and taking the mark, and being eternally damned.
Satan is using these "powerful elite," damning their souls in the process, by offering them what they seek after in this world: money, power, authority over people's lives due to their positions of election, power, or influence.
Rather than seeking after God in service to truth, for an eternity of peace, love, and harmony where all work together as one ... they seek to satiate worldly lusts, personal pleasures, personal goals, and to do so only for a short time, a tick of the clock while they are adults in power here upon this world.
Eternity last a lot longer than even a 60 or 70 year rule of absolute power here upon this Earth -- and how many of those have their been?
It's the same temptation given to Jesus by Satan in the wilderness during Jesus' 40 day fast. This same temptation given to men today, men who, unlike Jesus, are willing to forsake all and answer Satan's call. They then become his servants, agents of evil, doing harm for personal gain/glory, which will not endure, rather than standing fast and serving God by pursuing truth, righteousness, peace, helpful ends for all people.
God's ways alone are right. And we must pursue Him first, God first, and let Him then direct the water currents of our lives to place us where we should be.

There's an interesting one called "The Peacemaker" on Netflix from the 1940s. A man of God uses Godly ways to prevent a community from being completely twisted about by the enemy's influence (through lies, deceit, treachery). That man of God was also a former gunslinger who wound up in prison. He became a believer, then a pastor, his life changed. He stands in the church at one point and prays a prayer that was so moving, so simple. Quite a movie in that regard.
