>Brenda, one thing an old school COBOL programmer has that most visual programmers DONT is integrity of data. Just because we get data into a table, not all is always fine. My first programming job was in COBOL and I moved into FoxBase Mac/DOS right after that. Remember there's more to it than nice looking graphic screens.

without a doubt the IBM Mainframe toolset has no peers. especially data retrieval, backup, recovery, etc. the third party software for VASM and DB2 is proven. i never heard of a corrupted record until 6 monthes ago. do not even get me going about networks and PC workstations. there is no doubt that the IBM coaxial connection (PC or dumb terminal) provides a more stable environment for the client. Unfortunately clients buy their software like people buy their cars. We are victims of advertising. The look of the car and the placement of the drink holder is more important than what Consumer Reports or JD Powers says about owner satisfaction.

Oh well. the writing has been on the wall. in america the client dictates the market. There is an up side for this old bird, at least i am programming in something new, because "God is mainframe programming BORING".
