>naturally London is in a fever of anticipation about Pittsburg Steelers and Minnesota Vikings. You can hardly move for people going about their normal business with no interest in this game whatsoever.

As of Tuesday 84,000 seats had been sold at Wembley with only singles and premium still available.

I grant you we are not sending two teams than are currently representative of the best the sport has to offer,

I don't think American football will catch on in UK for some of the same reasons your football does so poorly here (aside from it being boring :-) There is not feeder system from universities. Even in US where soccer is ubiquitous in schools, there really isn't much men's college soccer anyone cares about and anyone really good would probably be better served by playing for a European club.

How common is it in UK to put 100,000 in a stadium for a rugby or football match? (regular season, non-championship) ? I know comparisons are difficult as you have both national and club matches and I'm sure the number of games in season effects numbers as well. I know the big matches and cup matches are well attended but on a regular basis what would be considered a full house for most football?

Update: this piqued my interest so I started googling. If Wikipedia numbers are right, average attendance for clubs like Man U , Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barca, Celtics, Rangers and a lot of German clubs are all pretty impressive.

Still need to research number of games on the schedule - I assume it is a lot more than 16 games a season but given that on BBC a full season is 6 episodes this may be a thing where players get mandated 11 months vacation a year :-)

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
