Actually, Kevin, you're right on this. It's nothing new.
The Irish did it during the mid 19th Century. They'd elect one of their own to office and that pol, by doing some simple math, figured out that getting more Irishman in his district would make life a lot easier, so he invited them by the boatload while promising government handouts and a land of milk and honey.
Germans, Italians and Jews did the same thing during the early 20th century.
My wife's grandparents were coaxed over from Germany that way.
Hispanics did it during late 1940's and 1950's. Certain Democratic politicians in NYC were notorious. They'd actually charter the boat to get the people here and some sections of Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn looked like suburbs of Puerto Rico and were pretty tough places for a while.
It was pretty messy at first and it took a couple of generations to work itself out.
Yes, most of those those people went on welfare till they got going, and yes, they blindly supported the pols who brought them in, but that's been over for decades.
Sonia Sotomayor, one of our supreme court justices, is a child of immigrants and grew up in one the toughest sections- Fort Apache.
Colin Powell, another child of immigrants, also grew up in one of those tough sections in the South Bronx.
Speaking of the supreme court - two of the darlings of the right - Nino Scalia and Sam Alito - can trace their roots to people who were brought in during those waves.
Was all that welfare we paid out worth it?
I think it was.
Were those pols scheming and devious?
Sure they were, but I think they did us a service in spite of themselves.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
