The word "gospel" means "good news". John was the youngest of the disciples of Jesus, the one who recorded the Gospel of John, I John, II John and III John, and he was chosen by God to record the end times prophecies in the book of Revelation. It is possible he is alive today, as it mentions at the end of the book that Jesus says to Peter regarding John, "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me." In modern English, "If I want him to remain alive until I come, what matter is that of yours? You follow me."

Some background about who Jesus is, and why we need Him:
Jesus is the Son of God. And He is beyond anything imaginable. Wondrous beyond words. He came to reclaim that which was lost. And He did. He guides men now toward Truth, toward Himself, toward eternity. He calls men to serve Him rightly in this world, forsaking the ways of this world, and pursuing His ways, eternal ways, Heavenly ways, Kingdom building ways. He receives all who come to Him without exception, no matter their past, their misdeeds, their sin. So long as a man truly comes to Him, they too will be saved. He paid the price for our sin because He is love. Love in the flesh. Love in the spirit. But He is also Holy. He cannot abide sin. And all who sin will pay the price for their sin, unless they be in Christ, unless they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior (and that truly).
