Subtitles are open.

OK, actually subtitles are a translation; closed captions are the description of the sound for those who can't hear it, including [rain], [explosion], and such.

While in the US and while we were still watching TV, I've found that most of the time it's better to keep the sound off and just read CCs. The primary benefit of this is that it doesn't start shouting at me every six minutes (adverts are about 30% louder than the filler between them), and the secondary is that I don't have to prick up my ears and try to understand the voices, which come with dozens of different accents and are mixed in with the background noise in a way which may sound nice on a surround system, but is kind of garbled when downmixed to mono. Our 2nd set was stereo, IIRC, but the speakers were in it, on the sides, and it suffered from the same effect (and so did we).
