In most of the rest of the world pretty much everyone is used to subtitles. I had some problem with them up to age of about ten, because of the way they were burned onto the images, which made them often unreadable on lighter background, and I wasn't fast enough either. Ah, and the font was some cursive, which also made it harder. Then the TV came and the subtitles were white uppercase sans on black background, and even my grandmother had no problem reading them (even though they were always in latin characters and she grew up with cyrillic).

I've seen a few movies with overdub, in several countries, and it sucks. The worst, by far, are the Hungarians and Germans, where the actors don't even try to act, they read it as news. Then there's Russians, who have one guy who reads everything, and you sort of hear the original behind. That may be an equivalent of sitting next to an interpreter while watching, but it also sucks. It's pretty much like listening to a symphony through a payphone.

For any non-english movies that I could get at Netflix (miserably few, and they're all the same genre: foreign), I'd always choose the original language plus subtitles if I couldn't understand the language. For "Avalon", I saw the english version, concluded that there must be some good movie behind the cripple they showed me, and then found the version in polish. I don't really speak polish, can read but not always understand when spoken, so in some cases I had to re-run some scenes to understand what they say (and the subtitles helped, but didn't cover everything). All of a sudden everything made sense, the gestures fit with voices, there was all the atmosphere.
