Even placing the disk in a USB contraption may help by itself. I have a terabyte disk which, I thought, developed a mechanical problem, probably from vibration caused by loose screws (never have the right screws, do we?). I moved it into the USB box and it kept happily spinning for three years and counting. Probably the electronics in the box aren't asking too much of it, and at these lesser speeds it doesn't break a sweat.
