I'll be honest, I wasn't fully aware of that. Obviously, any database that's using newer database features won't have a prayer of running in prior versions. But if you would have asked me, "can you create a database in sql 2008 and create a single basic table that you could have done in sql 2000, then back up the database, and restore the BAK to another system that's using SQL 2005", my answer would probably have been something like, "I don't think I've tried it, but I'm not aware of anything", and might have thrown in a "but you might want to try a test to be sure", depending on the nature of the topic.
The only times I've ever had to go backwards (very few times), it was obvious that scripts and packages were needed because of features lost in the downgrade. Some people have to deal with that all the time, but I've been fortunate.
