>>OK, anyone with taste in music as good as yours is entitled to OS eccentricity <g>

>>They are truly in the Pantheon. This album should be required listening before the age of 10 so kids at least get to hear music before being exposed to (shudder) pop, punk, rap etc. (of course they still get Pink Floyd 101 and much blues piano)

>Ha, thanks. "Kind of Blue" is just stunning. I know every note, every nuance, because I've listened to the entire album a million times.

>A sometimes overlooked classic is Coltrane's "Blue Train" album. It's another five star gem.

>Lately I've been listening to Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers (I go through cycles). They never had any one classic album - just consistently enjoyable hard-bop.

>Re: Pink Floyd, I'm somewhere between casual listener and fan of their music. But they certainly have earned their status.

>There are only 3 rock bands I regularly listen to...Rush, Yes, and Emerson, Lake, Palmer. (Certainly like Genesis, Pearl Jam). Hate pop, and I think 99% of rap and hip/hop should be, as Tony Soprano says, "flushed down the pisciadood"

I always think of Floyd in the context of albums like Kind of Blue on the strength of 2 albums - Darkside of the Moon and Wish you were Here. Like Hotel California, Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert and of course some others I can just put on the headphones and listen right through pretty much any time - or play them in my head.

I'm not much into hard bop though. Too linear for me to get the stuff out of it I really want. Being a piano player what works for me are the chord changes and substitutions as stacked. Fascinates me. Like it is some kind of cosmic code that can unlock the secrets. (music of the spheres?)

I completely geek out with a fake book just watching how it all moves. I can spend half a day just feeling how extended chords work and doing alterations on a II-V-VII. Hard for me to play with anyone else because I get lost completely in my own world and completely forget what it is we are playing. my wife says I have made ADD a musical genre all its own. <g>

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
