I've used an older version of Cryptor (
http://www.xitech-europe.co.uk/cryptor5.php) successfully. As Tore says it does make maintenance a little more difficult but I don't think there's a noticeable performance penalty. And as Thomas points out it is not *too* difficult to crack - but that depends on how hard someone is going to try :-}
That said, the app has been out there with ~3k users for the last 10 years and I don't recall any database problems (corruption etc) which could be attributed to its use.
The version I used also allowed encryption of individual fields rather than whole tables if required - but I don't see that mentioned in the current version.
