This makes debugging very frustrating. If this is a bug in 5.0, then there is nothing I can do. However, is there a solution to this?

Afterall MS did not only upgrade VFP5 to VFP6 to sell more copies, version 5 was a well known rubbish. I am asthonished your client refuses to upgrade. Personaly I would not waste an other minute on this.
