I have been comparing Windows XP Pro and Windows 8.1. Windows XP Pro does provide this C$ and D$ by default. But, it seems Windows 8.1 no longer provides this. If this is the case, this means we cannot map a drive from another PC to that one using the C$ or D$ approach. Is that correct? If that is the case, then as I mentioned in the first message and as you just mentioned here, the only way is to go in Advanced Sharing, enabling the share and assigning the permissions. On the Sharing tab, the Share... is disabled by default.
