That's sort of what I thought. Reinstalling is probably the only absolute clean way.

I have probably installed SQL Server over 100 times (mostly on VMs). Just from my own mistakes, I always to know slow down on the screens that prompt for the instance name, the shared features, which service accounts to use, etc.
