Yes, the login remained there since years as people got used to have it right away on the main page. As most of the people want to get right away in the support area, it was a time saver to have it there. On most sites, you'll have a LOGIN link at the top. Then, it will bring the login page. So, here, the main page always has it. However, if you go back to the main page, or any other pages out of the support area, after the login, you will see that the top menu adjust itself to represent LOGIN or LOGOUT, depending if you are logged or not.
There could still be place for enhancements. I will look at that in the new year as well as your other suggestions.
