>>There are all sorts of gems out there that aren't exactly in the mainstream. Another band I like is Porcupine Tree. And a few years ago, Green Day proved they could create some REALLY good music.

>>But Rush is a once-in-a-millennium phenomenon. Geddy Lee is rated as one of the best bass players in the world and has a work ethic second to none....Neil Peart's skills as a lyricist and a drummer are almost legendary....and while Alex Lifeson hasn't always received the same accolades, over time he's gained a high level respect among other musicians.

>>Anyone's taste in music is always subjective and usually very personal. I first heard their track "Limelight" in 1981 and then saw their famous Montreal Forum concern on VHS, and was in awe that three guys could be THAT good. I've been hooked every since.

I can see your point if you haven't heard of them. As a longtime classic rock person, I was only familiar with Rush because they got some mainstream airplay only after other rock legends made it acceptable to have more than a 3 minute song. Now I am hooked - I gotta agree with Kevin on this one...legends. Very few rock bands have lasted as long as Rush - while (mostly) sticking to their prog rock roots despite some incredibly difficult personal circumstances. It took them years to finally get into the Rock Hall of Fame and when they did...they continued to thumb their nose to the rock establishment (see Alex Lifeson's acceptance speech LOL)

Neil Peart in particular is a master of rock percussion - I would also agree that he is a legend. He is a very quiet, introverted person who shuns personal appearances whenever possible and regularly continues to take lessons from other greats. He has been invited by the family of Buddy Rich to play Rich's music at more than one memorial concert.

This is a great example of his ability to fuse rock, swing, techno/electronic and rudiments into one 8 minute master class. He uses two completely different drum kits, switches between matched and traditional grips effortlessly and just makes it look simple...which it surely isn't.
