It's interesting that most of the bands mentioned so far in this thread have noteworthy male lead vocalists.

Geddy Lee is IMO a true alto, unique IME. Yes, it can sound weird, even artificial, but fans would say "otherworldly" ;) That's what keeps 'me coming back - sounds they can't get anywhere else.

I was listening to "Highway to Hell" the other day and I remember thinking you could practically hear the booze dripping off Bon Scott's vocal cords. Brian Johnson is definitely a worthy successor but you don't quite get that with him :)
