Encountering ice fundamentally means you have less grip than expected. It can be a much better decision (maybe life or death) to use what grip you have to steer around an obstacle, rather than trying to stop.
Making sure you don't overdrive the conditions means you're aware of the conditions at all times, and constantly testing. You're being proactive.
