Was anything recorded to the Application or System Event Logs on the affected machines?
A lot of orphan files in the Temp files folder? Interference from antivirus software?
Are the users using Excel at the same time?
FWIW my understanding is Office applications are not suitable for heavy duty as COM servers, intermittent errors are to be expected and need to be coded around.
