Yes, when he left for Philadelphia, he took out a full page add in the major local papers thanking the Jays fans. The thing is that after somebody leaves
Toronto, on return to play against us, they are always booed unmercifully. Probably the same with most cities. When Doc came back to play against the Jays, he got a standing ovation that went on and on. His last few years in Toronto were played on a cut rate contract because they promised him that if they had the money they'd get the players to go to the playoffs. He was willing to play for less than he was worth for that. When he left, everybody knew he was chasing the playoffs, and not a fan in Toronto begrudged it. When he and Brandy left, Toronto was a lot poorer for it, and not just baseball.
Now the act of signing a 1 day contract with the Jays so he could leave with the one who brought him is just way too classy for words.
>>Once again, the Doc shows what class really means.

>It takes guts to retire when you no longer have it rather than dragging it out. He also paid for a full-page ad here thanking the fans and the city. I assume he did something similar up there?

>And fwiw, the most exciting ballgame I ever attended was his no-hitter in game 1 on the NLDS. I was looking for something else earlier in the week (before he announced) and ran across some messages I wrote at the time. Among them that instead of being nervous in the final innings, we just considered completion of the no-hitter inevitable.
