OK, I didn't read all the posts so you might have already answered this. You're saying you tried to search the MDF file on your H: drive and the machine hangs?

Two things...first (and maybe you already did this), try temporarily stopping the SQL Server service (if you can)

Second....I hate the regular File Search in Windows 7/8....there are lots of File search utilities on the web (free ones) that are better than the one in Windows. (I wish the old XP version were still an option). I use this one:

It's not perfect but much better than the native one in Windows.
