For me the benefit of trying to control where stuff is saved to lies in having it easier to set up backup strategy for such stuff. Esp. as I am often looging into my own PC under different user names (as that eases handling when I need to connect into foreign networks as hired gun) having stuff under "neutral" directories set up according to my naming rules makes life easier. Also easier to re-use such stuff from inside one of my VM's, as they can be selectivly enabled to see my target directories.
