Could be that SQL Server isn't configured to allow remote connections. There may be something here that will help. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/6785d80c-4cbb-456b-87d8-f4a4e5fb561d/developer-edition-remote-connection-and-related-issues?forum=sqlgetstarted

>I have an app server that has the default instance in Sql Server 2012 (developer edition) installed. I have an Identical installation on my laptop and want to connect from laptop ssms to server db. Both are on a workgroup, no domain. Both have TCP/IP enabled. If I browse for network servers on the laptop, it returns the server as a choice. I pick that and try to connect.

>A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
