By "close the laptop" do you mean that you just lower the screen onto the keyboard, without shutting it down? If so that puts it into hibernation/sleep. I've seen tons of laptops have problems resuming from hibernation/sleep. If you're shutting down for the night I recommend a complete shutdown.
If you're regularly using an external monitor, projector or other device you should familiarize yourself with the laptop keystroke combination that toggles through the various video output modes:
- laptop only
- exterior device only
- both
It's usually something like Function...F8, you should see symbols on the correct F key.
