>>I thought the Super Bowl sites are picked years in advance (?) So, neither team playing would be the "home" team unless by chance they happened to be playing in the Bowl that year. Is it even possible that any of the teams currently alive could be a home team for the Super Bowl?

>True, Super Bowl sites are picked years in advance. There is a concept of a home team and road team, but they alternate every year. I believe the AFC Team will be the home team this year. Home team gets to wear their home jerseys (which they usually prefer), which are "usually" more colorful than road uniforms. And the road team gets to call the coin toss to open the game.

>NFL is the only major U.S. sport where championship game location is not based on any merit. In the NHL and NBA the championship series city schedule is based on record of opposing teams. In MLB they used to alternate years like the NFL, but now they go by winning league in the All-Star game (a rule I hate). In the NFL you could (at least theoretically) have a 9-7 team in one conference play in a Super Bowl in a city that's close to their location, against a 13-3 team that hails from a city 3,000 miles away. Don't like that either, but don't know how to resolve it.

The elephant in the room -- a Super Bowl in New York at the beginning of February? I'm sure it will be entertaining but hope weather doesn't distort the outcome.
