That sounds like RPGII that you were writing on the system 34. It was gruesome.
RPGIII was quite a different language though.
It was developed by some IBM programmers at what was then called a "skunkworks" and it quickly attracted a cult following that's still strong today.
The name RPGIII was unfortunate. It never shook off the taint of earlier RPG's.
Its latest version is at the heart of the AS400 platform.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
