I can't claim to know the infernals of DOS or Windows - both are known to be full of kludges - but I'd bet that this trick wasn't employed by each of the networks I listed, unless they had to use OS-level locking.
Still doesn't matter, it worked for all those years, and in their infinite wisdom the Redmongers decided to break it and then refused to fix it, practically killing the whole ISAM spectrum of products, so they, what, wouldn't impede the sale of SQL server?
