If the hard drive is Western Digital you can use this:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119I used to boot a Knoppix LiveCD and use ntfsclone to image Windows partitions as compressed files to a Linux partition on an external USB hard drive, but that's a bit involved for the average user. These days there are other tools (none of which I've used), you can Google [open source image backup tool for windows].
