Alternatively you can use CPU ID. Hard Disk Number Volume Serial Number is also an other option, but the Volume serial Number Changes when you format your Hard Disk.
So the best way is to use combination of CPU ID And MAC No. In absence of MAC no you can proceed with CPU ID.
We are using the mac address to identify the client machines on a network.
