Last year I received a private email from him (not to UT private email, but to my personal email address). In that email he had another last name.

Having said that, I have been East Asia many times, and I have met many Asians. It's quite common for Asians to have two "official" names, one local name and one more "English language friendly" name. For instance most Chinese I have met, have two different first names, one Chinese and one English. So if a Chinese has a given name of Chai Ho Ming, his English name may be for instance Charles Ming. On their business cards they often have the English name and address and other info on one side. On the flip side you find their local name and other info, sometimes with their name in both English and in their local language and characters.
