FWIW, in both cases I cited, no treatment was undertaken. The thing was identified and clarified and then ignored. In my husband's case, he had enough testing (don't remember what--it was 25 or 30 years ago) to ensure that it wasn't dangerous, and then we promptly forgot about it.
